Hey there—it’s Curtis! If you’ve booked a family session with me (or you’re thinking about it), that’s awesome. Capturing authentic, heartfelt photos of families is genuinely my favourite thing to do. To make things stress-free, I’ve put together this simple guide to help you easily prepare your family for our session. Let’s keep it relaxed and enjoyable!
My Easy Guide to Preparing for Family Photos in Winnipeg
What to Expect at Your Family Session with Me
Forget stiff poses and forced smiles—that’s definitely not my thing. My photography style focuses on capturing genuine moments, candid laughter, and your natural interactions as a family. While we’ll spend most of our time relaxed, having fun, and enjoying the moment, rest assured we’ll still take plenty of beautiful, classic portraits in between. It’s the best of both worlds!

Choosing What to Wear
Coordinate—Don’t Match
When selecting outfits, aim for complementary colours instead of identical ones. Soft neutrals, earthy shades, or pastel tones all photograph beautifully, whether we’re exploring nature or Winnipeg’s urban spots.
Layers and Textures Work Wonders
Adding layers like scarves, sweaters, or jackets, along with textures like denim, lace, linen, or knitwear, can elevate your photos and create visual interest.
Comfort Comes First
Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident. When you’re comfy, it truly shows in your photos. Also, comfortable shoes are essential—especially for kids. Happy feet lead to happier faces!

Preparing Your Family (Kids and Partners Included!)
Tell the Kids It’ll Be Fun!
Let your kids know you’re heading out for some fun with your friend Curtis (that’s me!). Using my name helps build familiarity, making it easier each year we get together. One of my favourite parts of this job is building ongoing relationships—watching your kids grow from childhood milestones to graduation and, who knows, maybe even their weddings someday!
Full Bellies and Happy Hearts
Hungry kids (and adults!) rarely make for happy photos. Make sure everyone has eaten before the session, and consider bringing simple snacks and water bottles along just in case.
Partners & Photo Sessions
If your partner feels camera-shy or hesitant, reassure them this session will be relaxed and enjoyable—not stiff or awkward. I promise we’ll keep things easy, comfortable, and even fun. Most often, hesitant spouses end up saying, “Hey, that wasn’t so bad!”

What to Bring Along
- Simple Snacks & Drinks: Easy snacks for quick energy boosts.
- Comfort Items: Bring your child’s favourite stuffed animal or blanket.
- Extra Clothes: Especially helpful for younger kids—just in case!
- Wipes & Tissues: Handy for quick clean-ups during our session.

A Few Final Tips to Keep in Mind
Location Flexibility:
You can book your session in a meaningful spot like your backyard or summer cabin, or if you need help, I’m happy to suggest great Winnipeg locations that suit your family or partner best.
Kids and Hair:
If your child has longer hair that tends to fall into their face, consider tying it up or using cute barrettes to help keep it tidy and away from their eyes during the session.
Weather Considerations:
Weather in Winnipeg can be unpredictable. If the forecast looks uncertain, don’t worry—it’s easy to reschedule. We’ll touch base the week of your session, and if needed, we’ll set a backup date. No stress!

Relax—I’ve Got Your Back!
Seriously, your job during our session is just to enjoy your family. Don’t stress if the kids want to run around—I love photographing the joyful chaos of family life! I’ll make sure to capture all the authentic moments and beautiful portraits, so you can relax and have fun.
At the end of the day, these photos celebrate your family exactly as you are right now. Let’s make this experience fun, relaxed, and memorable!
