Simran & Udam

Winnipeg, Manitoba

What a week! Simran & Udam’s four days of Punjabi wedding traditions in Winnipeg were nothing short of epic. From the love and joy radiating between these two to the deep-rooted traditions they celebrated together, every moment was awesome to capture. I can’t even begin to describe how much I adore these two and their entire families. Normally, pre-wedding events in Punjabi weddings are hosted separately by each side of the family, but Simran and Udam decided to do everything together, from start to finish. It was a treat to witness their bond shining through every step of the way!

Their wedding team was nothing short of amazing, with the help of Urban Cam Productions, Hair by Reine, Beauty by Vee, Henna Art by Fatima, Decoret Theme, Avatar Decors, The Sign Source, DJ William, and the Punjabi Cultural Centre. Everyone worked together seamlessly to create this incredible celebration.

Thank you for everything you two and for all your visitors, I’ve written a little diddy highlighting each tradition with the photos to enjoy❤️

Simran & Udam’s Punjabi Wedding Traditions: A Joyful 4-Day Celebration

punjabi wedding traditions

Day 1: Mehndi & Jago Party

The first day kicked off with one of my favorite Punjabi wedding traditions—the Mehndi. The henna application ceremony is always a vibrant and intimate affair, with family and friends gathering around to get intricate henna designs on their hands. Simran’s hands and feet were decorated by the incredibly talented Henna Art by Fatima, and watching the women bond over this tradition was beautiful. It’s always such a joyous event, filled with laughter, music, and anticipation for what’s to come.

Later that evening, the energy was cranked up a notch at their Jago party at the Punjabi Cultural Centre. If you don’t know what a Jago is, you’re in for a treat—it’s basically an all-out dance party where everyone celebrates by lighting up the night with jugs of fire (yes, you read that right) while dancing their hearts out. Let’s just say that this crew did not hold back. They danced their asses off! The whole night was filled with pure, unfiltered fun, and I don’t think anyone was ready for the party to end. Capturing everyone’s moves on the dance floor was such a blast. I may have even busted a move or two behind the camera… but let’s keep that between us!

Day 2: Joint Maiyan & Vatna Ceremony

Day two brought us back to the family home for the joint Maiyan/Vatna ceremony, which was another special part of Simran and Udam’s celebration. This ceremony is where turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom to cleanse and bless them before the wedding. Typically, this is done separately by each family, but Simran and Udam wanted to experience it together. It was such a beautiful and intimate way to start the final stretch before the big day.

Watching them laugh as they rubbed turmeric all over each other at the end of the ceremony was the highlight of my day. It’s moments like these that make Punjabi wedding traditions so special—full of love, laughter, and family. And honestly, it’s hard not to laugh when you’re covered head-to-toe in yellow paste! It was also a touching moment when their families gathered around, cheering and laughing alongside them, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

This day truly exemplified how Simran and Udam’s love extends beyond themselves—it’s rooted in their families and the traditions that bring everyone together. I could feel how deeply these moments were appreciated by both sides, and I was honored to be there to capture every single one.

The first two days of Simran & Udam’s wedding week were filled with joy, love, and plenty of fun, and we’re only halfway through! Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll dive into their big Punjabi wedding ceremony and the epic reception back at the Punjabi Cultural Centre. I can’t wait to share more of their incredible story.
